History

In 1998 Paul and Jini Robie took a step of faith to plant a church in Draper, Utah.

When they arrived with their two boys (Ben and Evan) there weren’t any Christian churches in the entire city of Draper (population 28,000). The Robie’s began their church plant by starting a home Bible study with a few people they had met. Not having a core group to help launch the church, the Robie’s set about meeting people and inviting them to this Bible study. In the first three months, one of the couples in their study became Christians and were baptized. With six people now in their Bible study, the Robie’s stepped out in faith and signed a lease for 2,000 square feet of office / meeting space.

By October 1998, they had gathered a core group of 14 adults including Mike Bell (SMCC’s original Youth and Music Pastor) and his wife, Joani, from Seattle and were ready to start church services. On October 4th, having mailed 5,000 postcards and hanging thousands of door hangers; they had 40 people at their first worship service. They were on their way to fulfilling their mission statement of helping as many people as possible become fully devoted and fully delighted followers of Jesus Christ.

The meeting space on 9th E. in Draper was soon outgrown and the church moved to a 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse at their current location.  As the congregation grew it was necessary to exand the adjoining unit (10,000 more sq. ft.) and in another two years expand again (now a total of 30,000 sq. ft.).  In 2003, SMCC became a “parent” of a daughter church (Shadow Mountain Church) in West Jordan.  Then in 2006 it started its first satellite campus in the Daybreak Community Center.  A second satellite campus joined the SMCC family in January 2009.  This campus, The Springs, is in St. George, UT.

As good as the history of SMCC is, we are excited about the future. SMCC owns 17 acres in Draper and we are planning to break ground on our own facility on that property during 2011.
